In the pursuit of an "exquisite and beautiful" finish for products like high-end hair dryer shells or smart home panels, surface integrity is everything. One of the most common aesthetic hurdles is the appearance of small wrinkles, often referred to in the industry as flow marks, ripples, or striae.
These wavy, line-like patterns usually appear near the gate or at the far end of the flow path. They suggest that the molten plastic "stumbled" as it filled the cavity. Here is how professional mold manufacturers diagnose and solve this issue.
Wrinkles occur when the "skin" of the molten plastic cools too quickly and loses its ability to press firmly against the polished mold wall. As the following wave of hot plastic pushes forward, it deforms this semi-solidified layer, creating a ripple effect. This is usually a battle between temperature and flow velocity.
Before modifying the steel of the mold, engineers should first look at the injection parameters.
Increase Melt and Mold Temperature: This is the most effective way to eliminate wrinkles. By raising the temperature, the plastic remains fluid longer, allowing the internal pressure to "iron out" the surface against the cavity wall.
Adjust Injection Speed:
If wrinkles appear near the gate, it may be due to "jetting." Slowing down the initial speed can help.
If wrinkles appear at the end of the part, increasing the speed ensures the plastic reaches the edges before it starts to solidify.
Boost Injection and Holding Pressure: Higher pressure forces the plastic to maintain intimate contact with the mold surface, preventing the microscopic "buckling" that manifests as wrinkles.
If process adjustments aren't enough, the root cause often lies in the mold's architecture.
The Problem: A gate that is too small creates excessive shear heat and restricted flow, leading to ripples.
The Solution: At Sunye Plastic, we optimize gate diameters to ensure a smooth, laminar flow. Moving the gate to a thicker section of the part can also prevent the "hesitation" that causes surface chilling.
The Problem: The very first bit of plastic that enters the mold is always cooler. If this "cold slug" enters the cavity, it creates a localized wrinkle.
The Solution: Ensure the mold has a sufficiently large cold slug well at the end of the runner to trap this cooler material before it can reach the part.
The Problem: Uneven mold temperatures create "cold spots" where wrinkles are more likely to form.
The Solution: Use conformal cooling or precisely balanced cooling channels to ensure the cavity surface temperature is uniform across the entire part.
The "purity" of the raw material is a silent factor in surface quality.
Moisture Control: Damp resin creates steam during injection, which can appear as "silver streaks" or fine wrinkles. Strict drying protocols are mandatory.
Flowability (MFI): For complex, thin-walled shells like those in 3C digital products, selecting a resin with a higher Melt Flow Index (MFI) can help the plastic fill the mold more effortlessly.
Located in the heart of Dongguan, Sunye Plastic operates a 4,000-square-meter facility dedicated to zero-defect manufacturing. We understand that for personal care beauty salon instruments and intelligent household products, the shell is the brand's first impression.
Engineering R&D: We use Moldflow Analysis to predict ripple-prone areas before the first piece of steel is cut.
Precision Machining: Our independent mold manufacturing workshop ensures that every cavity is polished to the exact micron, reducing the friction that contributes to flow marks.
Strict Inspection: Every product undergoes a rigorous visual and tactile inspection to ensure that the "exquisite" quality our customers expect is delivered every time.
Small wrinkles on a plastic product are not just an aesthetic flaw; they are a signal of an unbalanced molding process. By harmonizing temperature, pressure, and mold geometry, manufacturers can achieve that flawless, glass-like finish that defines a premium product.
